Directions: If you know the Knoxville area fairly well but do not know Sequoyah Hills and Cherokee Boulevard, follow the directions provided immediately below. If you need more information, see the directions provided at the bottom of this page. The maps and images provided below should help!
Directions into Sequoyah Hills: Turn onto Cherokee Boulevard from Kingston Pike (that's a left turn if you are coming from downtown and U.S. 129, I-40 or I-75). Proceed exactly 2.5 miles to the southwest end of the Boulevard to the parking area for the Run (turning left into the gravel lot). If you get to the very end of the divided road, you've gone to far. Just turn around to your left and proceed about 300 yards back to the entrance on your right. Parking for participants on the day of the Run will be down the hill and to your left.
Someone will be directing traffic that morning and pointing you to the parking area, which is off to the left in the grass. Most of the parking in the gravel lot will be filled with alternative fuel vehicles and hybrids that are part of the event! Happy Trails!
Below are links to four maps showing the location of the Run for Clean Air and the race course on Cherokee Boulevard in Sequoyah Hills. (All maps will open in another window; they may not open at full size, so just click on them to expand them to full size.) They start from further out and then zero in, with the last image being an actual image of the run site location from Google Earth. Thanks Google Maps, Yahoo Maps and Mapquest!
Directions from major arteries into Knoxville:
From I-40/75 eastbound into Knoxville:
Once inside the Knoxville city limits, you will pass the exits for Gallaher View, West Hills and Papermill, respectively (about a 5 mile span). After passing the Papermill exit, go approximately 2 miles and you will pass the I-640 loop exit. Continuing on I-40 into downtown, you will go approximately another 2 miles before you reach a series of exits. You want to take U.S. Highway 129 south (which will be a wide right turn) and proceed roughly 1 mile to the first exit on your right, which is Cumberland Avenue. At the bottom of the off-ramp, turn right onto Cumberland Avenue which is just about to become Kingston Pike. Proceed roughly 1.5 miles to Cherokee Boulevard, which will be the 2nd red light you hit once on Cumberland Avenue. From here, go to top and follow directions on Cherokee Blvd.
From I-40 westbound into Knoxville:
Once inside the Knoxville city limits, you will pass an exit for Asheville Highway (70E, 11E). Approximately 1 mile after this exit, you will encounter the I-640 interchange. Proceed through the interchange staying on I-40 westbound into Knoxville. After clearing the interchange you will pass 3 exits (Rutledge Pike, Cherry Street and Broadway) in the next (approx.) 4 miles before entering the downtown part of Knoxville. Continue through downtown on I-40 and begin looking for an exit off to your right that directs you to U.S. Highway 129 south. Once on 129 south, proceed roughly 1 mile to the first exit on your right, which is Cumberland Avenue.
From I-75 southbound into Knoxville:
Merchants Drive is the first overpass you will encounter once inside the Knoxville city limits. After passing Merchants, your next obstacle is the I-640 interchange, just over 1 mile away. As you approach the interchange, you will see that I-275 goes into Knoxville and I-75 joins I-640 westbound. Take I-275 into Knoxville; this will require minimal lane changes as the same main route simply changes from I-75 to I-275. After passing the I-640 interchange, you will go about 2 miles passing the following exits and overpasses: Heiskill, Central, Woodlawn and Baxter. After the Baxter exits, less than 1 mile away will be a split: take the left side which is westbound I-40. Proceed roughly one mile and follow the signs for U.S. Highway 129 south. Once on 129 south, proceed roughly 1 mile to the first exit on your right, which is Cumberland Avenue.
From the airport:
Follow the signs for Knoxville. You will be getting onto state route 129 and traversing north toward Knoxville. You will go approximately 7 miles on 129 before climbing a small hill and encountering the University of Tennessee Hospital on your right. As you pass the hospital and top the hill, the University of Tennessee campus and downtown Knoxville will come into view on the horizon to your right. You will go over an eight-laned bridge which spans the Tennessee River and take the second exit on your right as you complete crossing the bridge, headed down to Cumberland Avenue. At the light, turn left onto Cumberland Avenue which is just about to become Kingston Pike. Go through the light just on the other side of the bridge (right after you turn left) and proceed roughly 1.5 miles to Cherokee Boulevard, which will be your 3rd red light you traversed after turning off of U.S. 129 northbound. From here, go to top and follow directions on Cherokee Blvd.
